Claude in Chrome: from a 1,000-user pilot to acting on its own

Published: Last updated:

Anthropic's browser agent began as a 1,000-user pilot on 25th Aug 2025 and reached every paid plan that December. It went generally available on 26th Aug 2026 and now acts without asking.

Claude in Chrome is Anthropic's browser extension that lets Claude read and act on web pages. Its arc is documented in Anthropic's own update notes.

A pilot limited to 1,000 Max plan users began on 25th Aug 2025. All Max subscribers joined from 24th Nov, and Pro, Team and Enterprise plans on 18th Dec 2025.

On 26th Aug 2026 Anthropic declared it generally available. The change that matters for site owners: Claude "can now also take actions autonomously in the browser".

The same day Anthropic announced a built-in browser for Cowork. Its crawler help page still names three bots and says nothing about browser traffic.

That silence is the open question for publishers.

Each step below links to its entry and primary source on our Claude tracker. The bots themselves are on our AI crawlers page.
